Oscar-winning Blade Runner score composer Vangelis dies in French hospital

Oscar-winning composer Vangelis, behind the scores for films like Chariots of Fire and Blade runner, has died aged 79.

His representatives confirmed to The Sun that Greek national Vangelis died in a French hospital.

No cause of death has yet been given.

A brief statement from his private office confirmed: “We regret to announce that the world renowned composer Vangelis has passed away on Tuesday, May 17th, late at night.”

Vangelis’ most iconic work included winning the 1981 Academy Award for Best Original Score for the film Chariots of Fire.

He also composed the score for flicks like Blade Runner and wrote the music for The Bounty.

Vangelis has sadly died aged 79

Later in his career he was commissioned to provide the soundtrack for major sporting events, including the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, the 2002 World Cup and 2004 Athens Olympics.

The star was born Evangelos Odysseas Papathanassiou in 1943, and left to move to Paris when he was 25.

He was a renowned composer

Fans of the musical star have already begun paying tribute online, with one writing: “Chariots of Fire and Blade Runner were among the most innovative and influential scores in the history of the medium.

“My personal favourite melody of his was Conquest of Paradise. A true musical pioneer. Thank you, #Vangelis. #RIP.”

As someone else followed up: “We’ve just lost another master. Vangelis passed away today. You might know him from his work on Chariots of Fire or Blade Runner.”

A third fan posted: “Farewell to Vangelis, one of the greatest composers who ever lived. His score for Blade Runner changed the landscape for film music forever, among his many other accomplishments. Turn off the lights, put this on, and pour one out for a legend.”

“As we get older, these moments are becoming more frequent. It’s sad that legends keep passing away. And Vangelis is truly one of the greatest. What he has contributed for us is unmeasurable RIP,” another said.

A fifth then echoed: “Rest in peace Vangelis. brilliant composer & performer, OG psychedelic freak lifetimes ago, peerless gear head, merciless puller of our heartstrings.”
