Peaky Blinders viewers praise BBC's touching tribute to the late Helen McCrory

Fans of BBC’s drama Peaky Blinders were certainly left touched by the latest scenes, as the show paid tribute to actress Helen McCrory.

The season finale kicked off with a bang on Sunday night, leaving viewers around the country excited to witness what was in store.

But as the drama began to unfold in the opening scenes, Thomas “Tommy” Shelby was reminded that the death of his family members was entirely his fault.

As he broke down in tears, he appeared to unwrap material from a corpse.

Shortly after an elegant picture of Polly Gray who was played by actress Helen appeared in the background.

Watching intensely, fans were evidently moved by the scene.

Rushing to Twitter, one fan penned: “Such a touching tribute. Beautifully done. Aunt Pol.”

Another fan said: “Watching Peaky Blinders but sending love & thoughts to all that knew the wonderful Helen McCrory. Aka Aunt Pol.”

A third commented: “And just like that, the whole of the Peaky fandom fell silent and wept. #RestInPeace #AuntPolly.”

While another fan posted a meme of a man crying and penned: “Me throughout that whole Polly scene.”

English actress Helen played an integral character in the BBC show and was loved by many.

As well as starring in Peaky Blinders she also appeared in films such as Skyfall, The Queen and a number of Harry Potter movies.

The award-winning star sadly passed away on April 16, 2021 after a long battle with cancer.

Helen is remembered by her two children Manon McCrory-Lewis, Gulliver Lewis and husband Damian Lewis.

Talking openly in a radio tribute about Helen’s death last year, close friend and theatre director Carrie Cracknell said the actress did not want anyone to know about her cancer diagnosis.

Carrie told BBC’s Today programme: “Helen wanted to be very private about her illness and I understand why. When you live in the public spotlight you have to find space to protect the things that are just for you.

“Very, very few people knew, and I only did because we were planning to transfer a show to Broadway and we had to cancel that because she was undergoing treatment. We were sworn to secrecy.

She added: “Her need to be fully alive and be committed and to take things incredibly seriously, such as her family and charity work, defined her last few years for her as much as ever.”
