Piers Morgan calls for Boris Johnson to be sacked as PM is fined over Partygate scandal

Piers Morgan has called for Boris Johnson to be sacked as Prime Minister after the politician got fined by police over breaking coronavirus lockdown rules.

Metropolitan Police confirmed on Tuesday (April 12) that Mr Johnson, his wife Carrie Johnson and Chancellor Rishi Sunak will all be given fixed after attending parties at Downing Street during the height of the pandemic.

He has become the first-ever serving Prime Minister of the UK to be sanctioned for rule-breaking after attending his own birthday party on June 19 2020, when the rest of the country was in lockdown.

Former Good Morning Britain Piers is not one to shy away from sharing his opinion and he took to Twitter to share his views.

He began: “How does a serving Prime Minister survive being fined by police for breaking laws that he enforced on the rest of the country?”

“He clearly misled Parliament at best, deliberately lied to Parliament at worst. Very serious moment for Boris Johnson.

Piers went on to ask fellow Conservative Party members if they were “comfortable” with “having law-breaking Prime Minister & Chancellor”.

He fumed: “Bottom line: why should the British public follow any laws if those in charge of setting them so brazenly break them & keep their jobs?”

His attention then turned to Mr Johnson’s future in Downing Street and the former newspaper editor suggested it won’t be long before he’s given the elbow as Prime Minister.

He tweeted: “I’m struggling to see how Boris Johnson can survive become the first serving British Prime Minister to be found guilty of breaking the law.

“Especially when it was a law HE created to stop the rest of us doing what he then did.”

A Number 10 spokesperson said in a statement that the Metropolitan Police explained what the fixed penalty notice was in regard to, and confirmed it was relating to the gathering held at Downing Street for Mr Johnson’s birthday last June.

It read: “On 19 June 2020 at the Cabinet Room 10 Downing Street between 14:00 and 15:00 you participated in a gathering of two or more people indoors in the Cabinet Room at 10 Downing Street.

Chancellor Sunak has issued an “unreserved apology” after he received a fine for breaching Covid regulations, adding in a statement he understands “that for figures in public office the rules must be applied stringently in order to maintain public confidence”.
