Piers Morgan says he stormed off GMB to stop himself from slapping Alex Beresford

Piers Morgan claims he removed himself from the Good Morning Britain set last year to stop himself from slapping weatherman Alex Beresford after a fiery row over Meghan Markle.

The 57-year-old news anchorman was forced to quit the popular ITV programme in 2021 after programme chiefs asked him to apologise for his comments on disbelieving Meghan Markle in her bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Defiant Piers refused to offer up a sorry and cited the “freedom of speech” act, explaining that he was entitled to his opinion on the matter.

Having moved on to pastures new, the former TV star still likes to offer up his views on current affairs on Twitter – including the latest Oscars scandal that saw actor Will Smith slap Chris Rock over a joke about his wife’s shaved head (who is an alopecia sufferer).

Piers says he would have slapped Alex Beresford

The comedian made a GI Jane quip about Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head which led to Will storming the stage to defend his wife.

Weighing in on the situation, Piers backed the King Richard Oscar winner explaining that he would have “done the same” thing had he have been in his shoes.

His tweet read: “So much snowflakey b**ls**t re Oscars smackdown.

Piers and Alex clashed horns over Meghan Markle

“You can think Will Smith is wrong to slap Chris Rock but still understand why he did it if he though – incorrectly – Rock was deliberately mocking his wife’s alopecia in front of a gazillion people. I’d have probably done the same.”

A disbelieving follower took the opportunity to share a screen grab of the famous moment that Piers had waltzed off GMB, adding the caption: “Course you would.”

This prompted Piers to respond with comments that he had removed himself from the situation to prevent himself from slapping his co-star.

He replied to the sceptical fan: “Ironically, I walked out to stop myself slapping him…”

The exchange didn’t sit well with many of Piers’ fans online with one unimpressed person following up with: “Not something to be proud of frankly free speech is cherished by Piers as long as you agree with what he is saying.”

A second chimed in: “Just because you can understand why he did it doesn’t make doing it right. He should have walked away. Or go back stage and talk to him.”

Since the viral incident at the swanky awards ceremony, Will has since offered up his apologies to Chris Rock on Instagram.
