American television host Tucker Carlson has come under fire for calling Harry and Meghan Markle “fake” and “braindead” over their multi-million dollar Spotify deal.
The couple have received increasing pressure to abandon their partnership with the streaming service after it hosted anti-vaccination content made by US commentator Joe Rogan.
Rogan was accused of spreading misinformation about Covid-19 vaccines, which have been proven to be safe to use and effective against the virus.
Spotify has reportedly since been silently removing episodes of Joe’s show, The Joe Rogan Experience, from its library.
Musicians Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Graham Nash and India Arie all requested that their music be removed from Spotify due to Rogan’s comments.
Harry and Meghan landed the Spotify deal for their Archewell Audio podcast and released the first episode in 2021.
Fox News presenter Tucker Carlson slammed the couple and shared his thoughts on the deal: “That annoying fake duchess from LA and her brain-dead husband threatened to walk if Spotify refused to muzzle Joe Rogan, but they’re not going anywhere..”
“These two grifters have a $25million podcast deal with Spotify for essentially no work.”
He added: “So far, we believe they have produced just over 30 minutes of content. That means these two have been paid about a million dollars for each minute of talking they’ve done. That’s a good gig. It’s too good to leave.”
Another host, Greg Gutfeld, said they were “a bunch of deadbeats” and judge Jeanine Pirro called them “pathetic”and ‘irrelevant’.
After the recent Spotify controversy concerning Joe Rogan’s anti-vax material, Harry and Meghan released a statement, which read: “Since the inception of Archewell, we have worked to address the real-time global misinformation crisis.”
They continued by mentioning that “hundreds of millions of people” are affected by the distribution of “rampant mis-and-dis information” every day.
“Last April, our co-founders began expressing concerns to our partners at Spotify about the all too real consequences of COVID-19 misinformation on its platform.”
“We have continued to express our concerns to Spotify to ensure changes to its platform are made to help address this public health crisis,” they said before ending by urging Spotify to be “committed” to continuing their work together.
Despite this, many have criticised the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and continue to doubt their intentions. Public relations expert Anthony Burr thinks the deal is a “disaster” and that the couple should assess it “very carefully”.
