It might come to a shock for some royal fans that Princess Diana’s childhood home won’t be inherited by her two sons Prince William and Prince Harry.
Instead the Northamptonshire property will be inherited by 27-year-old actor Louis Spencer.
He was born in 1994 and is the youngest of the Diana’s brother Earl Spencer’s four children with first wife Victoria.
Despite the actor having older sisters, the 13,500-acre Althorp estate will go to Louis due to an old family tradition where the oldest male inherits the stately home.
Louis has reportedly already started attending trustees’ meetings for the Grade I listed property Althorp House and the earldom.
The actor’s eldest sister Lady Kitty Spencer, 30, told the Mirror about the family tradition.
She said: “Primogeniture can be a tricky topic, because as times are changing, attitudes are as well.
“We’ve grown up understanding that it’s Louis to inherit, and Louis will do an incredible job.”
In 2015, the current Earl Spencer, Princess Diana’s brother said he was happy with the tradition in place.
He said: “I would be totally relaxed about Kitty inheriting it, but … if I chose Kitty it would be against all the tradition that goes with Althorp.”
The aristocratic estate was Diana’s home growing up before she married Prince Charles in 1981.
Althorp boasts 90 rooms and a portrait gallery but this is not the only home the family own.
They also own homes in London, Northamptonshire, Norfolk and Warwickshire.
Following Princess Diana’s death in 1997 she was buried on a small island on the estate in the middle of the ornamental Round Oval lake.
According to the Telegraph friends of Louis have described him as a quiet man and a talented actor.
One reportedly said: “He’s super private and gets on quietly with his thing. He’s a very talented actor and, I think, will be a brilliant one. You’d like him. He’s very low-key and genuine, decent and kind – and tall.”
Jonathan Shalit, chairman of the InterTalent agency, also added about the actor: “In terms of judging his potential there’s what he looks like and his family name … The Americans will love him, in particular. He’ll get some good roles from his name alone. And he’s good looking.”
