Iconic singer Rod Stewart was forced to abandon his microphone and pick up a shovel to fill in potholes close to his Essex home.
The 77-year-old singer donned a high-vis vest over a black sweatshirt and clutched a spade in both hands as he shovelled gravel into two huge holes in the road to make room for his Ferrari.
And Rod wasn’t afraid to get down and dirty with a clean-up crew, donning a pair of protective leather gloves and tracksuit pants for the occasion, along with a bright pair of mint green trainers.
Taking to Instagram on Saturday (March 12), Rod could be seen around a set of orange traffic cones, a roadwork sign and a truck filled with gravel as he explained that he had to take matters into his own hands.
And Rod helped boost morale by leading his crew in a singalong while they worked.
The Sailing singer could be heard explaining: “I’m repairing the street where I live, because nobody can be bothered to do it.
“This is the state of the road near where I live in Harlow and it’s been like this for ages.
“People are smashing their cars up. The other day, there was an ambulance with a burst tyre. My Ferrari can’t go through here at all!”
The star went on: “So me and the boys thought we would come and do it ourselves.
“We are filling the holes while millions and millions of pounds have been spent on the M11 over there.”
The star captioned his Instagram post: “Working for a living, filling holes is good for the soul!”
Fans quickly took to the comments section to praise Rod for his hard work, with one writing: “Well done! We live down the road from you and are so glad that finally something has been done about it!”
Someone else said: “This guy is amazing!”
“I’m loving those green shoes,” another fan echoed.
Others, however, were terrified of Rod hurting himself ahead of his tour dates, with one commenting: “Don’t hurt yourself, I’ve got tickets to see you in June!”
However, it seems Rod’s previous experience has stood him in good stead, at least, as he admitted he used to work as a grave digger at London’s Highgate Cemetery in his teenage years – long before finding fame.
