Rod Stewart's voice baffles BBC fans as he 'butchers' Sweet Caroline for Jubilee concert

Rod Stewart faced criticism for his Platinum Jubilee performance after he sang his own rendition of Sweet Caroline, which left viewers wishing he hadn’t.

The 77-year-old performed in front of the huge crowd in celebration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, held at the palace and broadcast on BBC One.

He got the audience enthused as he sang the popular Neil Diamond tune but viewers at home were left feeling flat.

Some took to Twitter to share their thoughts on Rod’s version of the karaoke classic.

An unimpressed fan tweeted out: “The Party at the Palace is good, but how can you butcher Sweet Caroline?”

Another wrote: “Was enjoying the Party at the Palace until Rod Stewart started singing Sweet Caroline.”

One dedicated viewer was definitely not a fan of Stewart’s singing and added: “Catching up with Party at the Palace. Now, Neil Diamond is my all time favourite and I do like Rod Stewart, but I’m sorry. No, no, no.”

After his overwhelmingly unsuccessful rendition, Rod went on to say that both he and his back-up singers were recently struck with Covid-19.

He told fans that they had all recovered before they returned to the UK during his US tour.

Rod said he “came home especially for this” and “got Covid,” which “all six of them had,” before he “got over it”.

The Rock ‘n’ Roll legend admitted the troupe were “just glad to be there”.

His three back-up singers wore dresses in the Union Jack colour way and helped Rod throughout his performance.

Rod wore a bright yellow jacket with black trousers and a white shirt before his fellow pop icons got up on stage for their turn in the spotlight.

Other artists included Ed Sheeran, Diana Ross, Duran Duran, Craig David, Hans Zimmer, Nile Rogers, Alicia Keys and Eurovision icon Sam Ryder.

Elton John was also scheduled to attend but fans were concerned for the singer’s health after his performance was shown via pre-recorded video.

He is currently on his Goodbye Yellow Brick Road tour, which has been continually postponed since it began in 2018 due to the pandemic and Elton’s health issues.
