Sheridan Smith and James Corden's doomed romance – Lily Allen rivalry to reboot snub

With the news that James Corden is setting his sights on a UK return next year, Daily Star couldn’t help but be reminded of one of the Late Late host’s turbulent relationship with Sheridan Smith.

Sheridan, who recently appeared as judge on the popular ITV singing competition Starstruck, was first acquainted with James in 2007 after she’d accepted the role of Smithy’s annoying sister on Gavin and Stacey.

But by 2008, the pair had confirmed that they’d gone their separate ways, leaving the twosome very much open for dates.

With the actress and the TV host putting their feelings on ice, the rumour-mill began to swirl that James had hit it off with songstress Lily Allen after they’d flirted on her BBC chat show.

When asked about his relationship status on the talk show programme, James gave a frosty response telling Lily: “It’s complicated.”

According to reports at the time, James and Lily did go on a string of dates, but the comedian was disappointed when he was finally friend zoned by the hitmaker.

Speaking about his brief dating history with Lily, James said in 2011: “I made it my aim to make Lily mine.

“I guess we were friends but, for my part, I definitely wanted more than that.”

While the pair enjoyed five or so dates, nothing romantic ever materialised and the following year James confirmed that he and Sherdian had instead rekindled their old flame.

At the time he told The Mirror Sheridan had been the “love of his life” and even hinted that wedding bells could be on the cards.

He told the publication in 2008: “Yes, Sheridan and I are back together and it’s going brilliantly, I couldn’t be happier. I want to marry my girl.”

But it seemed the Two Pints Of Larger And A Packet Of Crisps star had other ideas about where their romance would be heading – and marriage was seemingly not an option.

In 2009, their romance was soon over leaving James “heartbroken” while confessing his fears that he thought his life was spiralling out of control.

In an interview with The Times, he said: “I was heartbroken and lost.”

He went on: “I’d had a relationship with Sheridan which was heartbreaking, when you think something might work and it doesn’t. And I felt a bit lost.

“And feeling lost, and feeling heartbroken, and feeling single for the first time in your adult life, at the very moment when you become a little bit famous, is quite a potent mix.”

Getting on with his life, James moved into a flat with his then The History Boy’s co-star Dominic Cooper.

It was Cooper who introduced the CBS star to his future wife and charity worker Julia Carey, the pair completely hit it off and headed down the aisle to say ‘I Do’ in 2012.

The loved-up couple share three children together – Max, Carey and Charlotte.

While it appeared James and Sheridan were now worlds apart, their former romance began to make headlines again in 2019 when the West End singer was seemingly snubbed by the Gavin and Stacey creator over the long-awaited Christmas special.

Sheridan’s absence did not go unnoticed by Radio 2’s Zoe Ball, who quizzed her when she appeared on the weekday broadcast.

Responding to Zoe’s questioning about her no show on the Christmas episode, Sheridan said: “I wish. No, I’m not going to be in it. I don’t think, anyway.”

Getting frustrated, she later said: “I was only ever in 4 episodes. Why would they need to bring me back? There is no drama between me and James. And no story. Chill out! In other news… happy Wednesday.”

However, in a follow up chat with The Sun in 2020, Sheridan explained she’d be up for going back on the hit programme if the invite came along.

She revealed: “I’d definitely come back for a series,” before following up on their personal situation.

The ITV judge added: “I’m not in touch with James — he lives in America. If I saw him here, we’d hug.

“I’ve got a lot of love for him but we don’t see each other.”

Sheridan is believed to be single at the moment and is focusing on herself and her two-year-old son Billy.
