Simon Cowell refuses to confirm David Walliams’ BGT return amid leaked recording scandal

Simon Cowell is refusing to guarantee David Walliams will keep his job on Britain’s Got Talent.

The show boss failed to publicly back his pal in the wake of his scandal over abusive comments.

A leaked transcript showed David made lewd references about one woman and called a pensioner a “c***” during filming in 2020.

In an exclusive interview with the Daily Star, Simon dodged the topic.

Asked what he thinks about David’s behaviour, he said: “Can we not go there? If you don’t mind.”

And when asked if David will be back on Britain’s Got Talent in 2023, he admitted a decision is yet to be made.

He said: “Ask me in a few weeks.”

In another blow for David, Simon also declared the show’s judges aren’t vital for it to be a success.

Chatting at the Variety Club Showbusiness Awards, he said: “For me the most important thing is the talent. It’s always about that. If you don’t have great talent, you don’t have a show. That’s all I care about.”

Despite the scandal plunging the ITV show into crisis, Simon insisted he can’t wait to start filming the new series.

He said: “Of course it’ll be exciting to have it back. It’s my favourite thing.”

In a grovelling apology, he said: “I would like to apologise to the people I made disrespectful comments about during breaks in filming for Britain’s Got Talent.“

Comedian and author Walliams, who is best known as the co-creator of “Little Britain” with Matt Lucas, is said to have made the remarks to some of his fellow judges during auditions for the talent show in London in January 2020.

The remarks were picked up by the judges’ microphones and, according to The Guardian, were “understood to have been made for potential broadcast in ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ or other spin-off shows, which often feature candid remarks made by the judges between auditions.”

One comment that stood out in particular was directed at a female contestant, where he is heard saying: “She thinks you want to f**k her, but you don’t,” adding she had given him a “b***r” before it “shrivelled up inside my body.”
