Britain’s Got Talent will unveil a new “Paul Potts” shocker in the new series.
A seemingly shy busker called Maxwell Thorpe from Sheffield auditions for the judges.
They do not think he will be any good and will get buzzed off.
However he wows them with his performance – just like awkward mobile phone salesman Potts did back in 2007 with his operatic voice.
Head judge Simon Cowell says of Maxwell: “I thought he was brilliant and it was very much like the Paul Potts moment.
“It was a real surprise, I had no idea he was going to sing like that. He was so shy and I was praying it was going to work out for him. He’s absolutely amazing.”
The new ITV series of Britain’s Got Talent hosted by Ant and Dec will return on Saturday.
The show has not been on the box since 2020.
Cowell was forced to axe it last year as COVID restrictions made it impossible to film.
He explained: “It was hard because of what was happening at the time, which was the new variant had come out, I got really nervous about it.
“We were about two or three weeks out from auditions and I just thought ‘We can’t do this. The risk to everyone is too high’
“So it was tough, but I knew it was the right thing to do but we always knew it would come back this year.
“So I missed it but I had no choice. I hope that break, having not had it on air for a year, that the audience will like it even more, I hope they missed it.”
Viewers were left gutted early last year when BGT bosses confirmed that the programme had been completely scrapped, as auditions just couldn’t happen as they normally would.
The sad news followed a disrupted year for the ITV show in 2020, when there was a huge gap between the already filmed auditions and the semi finals, after Covid restrictions were brought in the first time and we were were locked down for the first time.

The longest reigning Britain’s Got Talent champion in the show’s history, Jon Courtenay, was eventually crowned in October 2020, going onto perform at the Royal Variety Show.
Jon’s win was an even sweeter one for hosts Ant McPartlin and Dec Donnelly as he was their Golden Buzzer Act, becoming the first ever Golden Buzzer contestant to go onto win, since BGT made its debut in 2007 and was won by Paul Potts.
Britain Got Talent returns this weekend on ITV and ITV Hub
