Actress Sofia Vergara is unrecognisable in the first images from her highly anticipated new Netflix series, Griselda.
The star of the Emmy-winning sitcom Modern Family will portray real-life drug kingpin Griselda Blanco in the popular streaming service’s new limited series, which tells the story of the notorious Colombian and her lucrative career in the drug trade.
The streaming giant released a first look of the 49-year-old star in full costume and makeup as the infamous narcotics trafficker, often dubbed the black widow.
Looking unusually understated, the star can be seen wearing a long sleeve printed top as she smokes a cigarette at a desk while shooting an ominous look to the camera.
The moody image makes for a spectacularly dramatic first-look at the upcoming series.
Alongside the photo, Netflix wrote: “Sofia Vergara stars as Griselda Blanco in a new limited series inspired by the Colombian businesswoman who created one of the most profitable cartels in history, which led to her being known as the ‘Godmother.’”
Blanco was reportedly was worth more than $2billion and was a key figurehead in Miami’s Cocaine Cowboy Wars.
Fans took to Twitter to comments on the stars new look, which received mix reviews as some believe the star is too attractive in comparison to the real Blanco.
Vergara’s new look has impressed a number of fans, although some aren’t sold on the “glow up” that the real Blanco is receiving.
One write: “Griselda was an obese lady. They picked one of the most fit actresses to play Griselda? I mean that’s okay, but try and make it believable.”
Another blasted: “Griselda was ugly… Stop IT now.”
While a third praised the casting, writing: “Love that you got a Colombian to play a Colombian. Looking forward to watching.”
After serving nearly two decades in prison on murder and racketeering charges, Blanco was shot and killed in 2012 at age 69.
The America’s Got Talent judge also serves as producer of the series with the creative team behind Netflix’s wildly popular Narcos franchise.
Vergara isn’t the first glamorous actress to transform her appearance to play Blanco.
Oscar-winner Catherine Zeta-Jones previously took on the role in the 2018 Lifetime movie Cocaine Godmother, thought the film was widely panned by critics.
Jennifer Lopez is also reportedly developing a film version of Blanco’s life story.
Vergara has reportedly been developing Griselda for the past eight years.
A Netflix rep confirmed that Griselda is currently in production with no launch date scheduled.
