Spencer Matthews to search for late brother's body in 'devastating' documentary

Spencer Matthews will search for his late brother’s body in a new Disney+ documentary.

The former Made in Chelsea star’s older sibling Michael Matthews passed away at the age of 22 on May 13, 1999 while scaling back down Mount Everest, hours after reaching the summit.

Michael became the 162nd person to die on the climb though his body was never recovered.

Speaking recently, Spencer confirmed his emotional attempt to retrieve Michael’s body will be documented in the forthcoming Disney+ show Finding Michael.

The emotional project will follow Spencer, 34, as he retraces Michael’s precise steps in the hours leading to his death.

Filmed in April, Spencer has revealed he made the journey just five days after the birth of his son Otto after a “weather window'” made scaling the mountain possible.

He told Holly Rubenstein’s The Travel Diaries podcast: “I was aching to find out more about his death.

“I was 10 at the time.

“I remember thinking it was really unfair. I always believed that I’d see him again and never took it on the chin that he was dead.

“I thought it was impossible.”

An experienced climber, Michael had successfully scaled Mount Kilimanjaro, the Pyrenees and the Swiss Alps prior to his death on Everest.

Confirming Michael’s tragic passing had “crushed his parents and brother”, Spencer’s attempt to retrieve his body follows Bear Grylls being unsuccessful in his own attempt to bring Michael home.

The adventurer led his own secret expedition to recover Michael’s body but recently confirmed his mission had been unsuccessful.

Of Michael, Spencer added: “I’ve always been uncomfortable with him being up there, especially in plain sight.

“I’ve always been uncomfortable that he could be laying up there like some kind of tourist attraction but also on his own, away from us.

“He died up there and his last thoughts will probably have been that he’s never going to see his family again.

“We have not seen his body and I set off to go to Everest and find him and bring him home.”

Finding Michael will air on Disney+ in February 2023.
