Strictly fans defend Matt Goss as they say he and Nadiya Bychkova were 'robbed'

Fans have rushed to defend musician Matt Goss, following criticism by the judges for his first Strictly Come Dancing performance.

Bros singer Matt performed a quickstep to Sir Duke with professional dancing partner Nadiya Bychkova as the first live episode kicked off on Saturday night (September 24).

However, they failed to impress judge Anton Du Beke, who told the When Will I Be Famous singer that he would “like a better line through the body”.

When Matt asked “what was good”, Anton told him: “Feet, timing, style, musicality,” but added further criticism by saying: “Unfortunately, you looked like an unmade bed.”

Judge Shirley Ballas also had mixed praise for the routine, saying: “You’re beautifully groomed, you’ve got a lot of swag and you definitely have a lot of potential.

“But for me, it fell a little bit apart. I’m looking for something… Is it the feet? Maybe it’s the knees? Maybe it’s the body position? The frame got lost, you were moving, rattling a little bit between the two of you.”

After the judges only awarded the pair 20 points out of a total 40, Strictly fans were quick to flock to social media to defend the singer, with one tweeting: “Somebody call the police because Matt Goss has been robbed tonight in Elstree.”

“Matt Goss really under-marked there,” added another.

A third agreed, saying: “Matt Goss was under-marked he was decent for week one.”

A fourth commented: “I thought that comment was so rude!” while a fifth added: “Matt Goss quickstep literally one of best dances so far tonight, and gets the lowest score so far from the judges. What the?!? Some very random scoring tonight.”

It wasn’t just the fans who were wading in to defend the star’s performance however, as fellow judge Craig Revel Horwood praised the performance during the judge’s critiques.

“They’re all being really nasty,” Craig said.

“That was punchy. It was a really great routine.”

Speaking about the judge’s critiques on Strictly Come Dancing spin-off show It Takes Two, Matt’s dancing partner Nadiya also addressed her frustrations at the comments Matt received.

“I’m not a judge but I am a professional dancer and I think they were a bit harsh to be honest,” said Nadiya.

She added: “Obviously he is a musician, but to actually do all the steps correctly, hit all the accents in 10 days of just rehearsing something new – I wouldn’t be able to go on stage and perform like he does. And he did it in front if the millions.”

However, Matt agreed that he needed the criticism, saying: “Motsi – she’s dead right. I was into the dance but she wanted to feel me more. And that’s what I needed. I needed that critique that I can actually go back and use, you know?”

He also added: “I did find great comfort in Craig – I never thought I’d be able to say that in Week One.”
