The Chase viewers were fuming when a contestant took the low offer on Friday night’s episode, with some even calling for a “ban”.
The Chaser, Darragh Ennis, was even forced to step in though after a barrage of hate was directed at one of the contestants.
Hosted by Bradley Walsh, the popular ITV gameshow saw four new contestants take on the chaser.
The four contestants competing against the chaser to take home some well-earned cash were Gillian, Mike, Linda and Barry. The foursome were up against Chaser Darragh Ennis in a bid to win big money.
Contestant Gillian, a marketing intern from Belfast, was first up to take on the challenge of the cash builder round.
The 22-year-old intern took the lowest cash offer of £1,000, after partaking in the cash builder round which saw her stumble before making it through the round by the skin of her teeth.
Gillian did well on the next round and made it back home, joining the other four contestants.
Next to take on the Chaser was Mike. He consulted fellow contestants, asking them which offer to take – £1,000, £3,000 or £30,000.
Gillian told the 58 year old he should take the £3,000 offer, something which left fans fuming.
Taking to Twitter one viewer said: “Gillian goes low, tells next guy, go middle. This generation!”
While another penned: “As if she’s told him to take the middle offer after her £1k. That should be banned.”
People were fuming with the 22-year-old intern taking the low amount, with Darragh, the Chaser even taking to Twitter to say: “Sometimes the low offer is the right one”, to which Gillian replied: “Thank you hahaha”.
After a barrage of hate directed at the intern, Darragh took to Twitter again to stick up for her and all other contestants who have taken the lower offer in the past.
Slamming keyboard warriors, Darragh penned: “Reminder: it takes guts to go on #TheChase and all the keyboard warriors giving contestants stick for taking a low offer need to remember they are real people. I have been on both sides of the table and the low offer often makes sense. You are wrong if you think otherwise.”
He then added: “What should be a fun day seeing yourself on TV can be horrible because of this. Keep it to yourselves. If you can’t say something nice and all that.”
The tweets garnered hundreds of likes, but the comments were switched off which prevented any viewers, fans or followers from commenting.
The Chase airs weekdays at 5pm on ITV and ITV Hub
