The Crown Series Five has launched today – but how much do you know about its new Princess Diana star?
The latest series is reported to detail some of the royal family’s darker days, beginning in the early ’90s and covering a period in which hostilities between Prince Charles and Princess Diana heightened.
As the series enters a new decade, Guardians Of The Galaxy star Elizabeth Debicki is subsequently taking on the role of Princess Diana, previously played by Emma Corrin – with Dominic West starring as Prince Charles.

With the highly anticipated series launching today (November 9), Daily Star takes a closer look inside the life of new Princess Diana star Elizabeth Debicki.
James Corden link
Everyone is talking about Elizabeth Debicki, as the star prepares to play Princess Diana in the new series of The Crown – but you may recognise the star from other Hollywood productions.
After making her film debut as Maureen in A Few Best Men in 2011, the star went on to appear in The Great Gatsby, for which she won the AACTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.
That’s not all, as she also landed a major TV role as Jed Marshall, opposite Hollywood hunk Tom Hiddleston, in BBC’s The Night Manager in 2016.
She also has a hidden link to comedian and actor James Corden, after Elizabeth voiced Mopsy in both Peter Rabbit films, with James voicing the titular character.
However, she is best known for her starring role as Ayesha in Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy: Volume 2, which she will be reprising the third film in the series in 2023.
The Crown revelation
Elizabeth is taking on the role of Princess Diana in the latest series of The Crown – but did you know she originally auditioned for another role?
Speaking to The Guardian, the actress revealed that she auditioned for a part in series two, but did not win the role.
Although she would not say what part she auditioned for, Elizabeth said the star who did get the role played it “beautifully,” adding: “Also, if I told people, they’d be like, what?”
However, the producers spotted something from her audition, with Elizabeth asked back to play Princess Diana for the new series.
She said: “They obviously saw something Diana-ish in my audition, which is really not what I was going for at that time.
“It was a much more formal, will you do this role?”
Secret talent
A talent for performance certainly runs in the family, as Elizabeth’s parents were both ballet dancers who met while working together on a tour in Europe.
Elizabeth subsequently studied ballet as a youngster, but revealed during an interview with Allure that she felt she was too tall to be a ballerina – with the star standing at six foot, three inches in height.
“I was taller than my teachers when I was 12, and I remember the lightbulb moment: This isn’t going to work,” she said.
The star later made the move into acting, and the rest as they say, is history.
However, she has revealed that studying ballet shaped both herself and her acting career, telling The Daily Mail: “I think there’s something about ballet that’s the focus on discipline.
“The assumption that you would be that disciplined [as a ballet dancer] really affects your mindset.”
In an unexpected coincidence, it is also reported that Princess Diana trained to be a ballet dancer.
Private life
Elizabeth has risen to new heights of fame during the past decade, but the star has explained that she is very protective over her personal life.
As such, it is not known who the star has dated in the past and whether she is in a relationship at the moment.
The actress has explained in the past that she tries to keep her career and private life separate as much as possible, revealing that she also does not use social media.
Speaking to Vogue Australia, she said: “I think that people with social media can blur it so beautifully, and I respect that, but it’s not really how I am and I just want the work to speak and people to receive it the way they will without anything influencing it.”
In a separate interview with The Sydney Morning Herald, she added that it was a personal choice to not use social media, but then joked: “Then it became a choice, because I think you just have to keep some things for yourself too in this business.
“Also, I am really daggy and boring.”
The Crown seasons 1 – 5 are available to stream on Netflix.
