The Feeling's frontman talks awkward Jon Bon Jovi tour snub and 'nostalgic' new album

The Feeling frontman Dan Gillespie Sells has chatted exclusively about the brand’s brand new album Loss. Hope. Love.

The stellar group first burst onto the scene in 2006 with their single ‘Fill My Little World’ which was soon followed by multiple singles and their debut album Twelve Stops and Home.

They were the most played act on UK radio that year and five albums later they’re back with another body of work.

Talking about the new album which drops on May 6th, Dan said: “I think what’s interesting about this album is that we were rediscovering our identity.

“This album we decided to go back to our roots and we made it during lockdown and it felt like we were getting back together again as five lads who have worked together for over 20 years and making music in its purest form.

“That’s why we think this album is special, it’s about coming together in difficult times to heal together.”

He continued: “We wanted to reconnect with 2006 when we were the most played act on British radio, that’s why a whole generation of people suddenly get flooded with memories when they hear The Feeling songs.

“We wanted to reconnect with that on the new album, reconnect with the joy and nostalgia.”

Talking about touring with some of the world’s biggest bands over their years, including Bon Jovi, Dan told us a behind-the-scenes detail.

He said: “Bon Jobi, the guys in the band were lovely, though, we never met on Jon Bon Jovi because he kept himself very separate.

“We felt slightly weird because they asked us to come on tour and then we never even met him.

“We had toured with Aerosmith and lots of really big artists, and every artist we ever played with has left us a drink in the dressing room but Jon Bon Jovi – nothing.

“My favourite was Jeff Lynne from E.L.O, as a band that really influenced us – we were influenced by 70s pop at that time that was almost deliberately uncool.”

But did The Feeling get up to some rather rock and roll behaviour in their time? Of course, they did…

Dan explained: “You can imagine five young men travelling around the world together. We got up to all sorts, I don’t remember a lot of it but the bits I do remember were a lot of fun.

“We have so many stories over the years that involved people going missing, the music starting on stage at Glastonbury and someone was stuck in the portaloo.

“We also toured with Kiefer Sutherland and toured America with so many different stars. So, it feels like we’ve survived the rock and roll partying.

“When I was young, I rejected the idea because I thought it was naff but now it’s like let’s enjoy ourselves and party like everyone else.”
