ITV didn’t hesitate to take advantage of its mega industry connections during the semi-finals of The Masked Singer.
The iconic singing competition kicked off with a bang on Saturday (February 5) with performances from the remaining celebrities including Rockhopper, Traffic Cone and Robobunny.
But the show introduced a new way of announcing clues, with ITV newsreaders roped into the process to deliver them.
ITV newsreader Mary Nightingale was first up to deliver some clues for Traffic Cone, with the judges Davina McCall, Jonathan Ross, Dame Joan Collins, Rita Ora and Mo Gilligan watching on in astonishment.
Next up was ITV newsreader and Loose Women star Charlene White, who gave the audience a few hints as to Rockhopper’s identity in a segment dubbed Clues Just In.
It definitely looked like ITV was up to take advantage of its star-studded connections to give the semi-finals a bit of an edge.
And the pair popped up once again to deliver the clues for the remaining characters.
Fans were loving the impromptu cameos, as one tweeted: “I’m also absolutely loving the brilliant @itvnews Clues Just In snippets with queen @CharleneWhite! So clever and fun. #MaskedSingerUK.”
Another echoed: “@CharleneWhite just wonderful!”
Someone else added: “Loving the news breaks with Mary Nightingale!”
“They have Mary Nightingale reading pretend news about somebody dressed up as a traffic cone, after said person dressed as a traffic cone sang the Piña Coloda song, and you’re telling me The Masked Singer is not the best programme on TV?” a fourth keen fan raved.
“Mary Nightingale being an icon!” someone else said.
Later in the programme, the first unmasking revealed Traffic Cone to be chorally trained singer and news presenter Aled Jones after a tense semi-final showdown.
The singer begged the judges to allow him to go back to singing classical music instead of his rendition of Piña Colada – but, once unmasked, performed a wonderful rendition of the pop track again anyway.
And he certainly left fans impressed with his singing prowess, as one tweeted: “The brilliant Aled Jones, just amazing.”
Aled later posted on social media: “What a brilliant fun experience! Singing stuff I don’t normally get to do! Thanks so much @maskedsingeruk and @itv – come and join #TrafficCone on tour end of the month and through March 😉 #TrafficCone #TheCone #maskedsingeruk.”
