Michael Owen has issued an apology after his exit from The Masked Singer in last episode’s tense double elimination.
Former Manchester United football player Michael was unveiled as Doughnuts, a character that has been dubbed as the most successful breakout star of the series so far.
Twelve celebrities have competed on the show over the last few weeks and previous Masked Singers have been unveiled as Heather Small, Will Young and Gloria Hunniford.
Michael, 42, was the second celeb to be voted off in last episode’s double elimination round.
He had made it to the sixth episode of the series and performed Everybody Get Up by Five, but was kicked off the show after the epic performance.
Owen has also performed Sweet Caroline, Eye Of The Tiger and Spice Up Your Life during his time on the show, which saw chiefs crown Doughnuts as their most popular star ever.
After his exit from the singing competition, Owen took to Twitter to post an apology to the show’s viewers for his vocal skills over the last few weeks and to thank the show.
He wrote: “Finally, I can apologise for burning your ears these last few weeks. My kids badgered me into doing The Masked Singer, but I have to say it was a great experience and a whole lot of fun.”
A shocked Michael ended the tweet with: “Still can’t believe I got past round one!”
In an additional tweet, he wrote: “Absolutely blown away by the reaction to my appearance on Masked Singer UK. Almost certainly the worst singer to ever appear on the show but I gave it my all and didn’t half have a blast!
“Never been so petrified. Totally out of my comfort zone. Have a great Sunday everyone.”
Even more shocked were the fans of the show as many were convinced that Owen would not have signed up for the competition.
One Twitter user said: “Nah, I was convinced Michael Owen would never have done The Masked Singer, never mind dressed as Doughnuts!”
Another wrote: “Spice Up Your Life was the TV highlight of the year.”
“Your voice was just so clearly you, it’s been fun laughing at the people who couldn’t tell it was you,” wrote a very observant fan.
His success was praised throughout the series, with boss Dan Nettleton said: “Doughnuts is a breakout star. We have never had someone with his singing ability get so far as he has got so far. This is a new thing for series three.”
