This Morning viewers cheer on Holly Willoughby as she shuts down tense row

This Morning viewers cheered on Holly Willoughby as she told Lembit Opik not to “trample” on Angela Rayner.

The former politician and the MP were on the ITV show to discuss Matt Hancock going on I’m A Celebrity, which Angela said just wasn’t on, particularly with big things going on in Parliament.

However, Lembit backed the former health secretary and tried to suggest that Angela also did things that weren’t related to her job, which she said wasn’t the case.

Things took a bad turn when he commented on her having declared “eleven dresses”.

Phil and Holly were discussing Matt Hancock doing I’m A Celeb

But Holly and her co-host Phillip Schofield weren’t having it.

“I’m sorry, what did you just say?” Schofe asked.

Angela then explained that she’d had 11 dresses donated to her because of the abuse she had been facing about what she wore in Parliament.

And she pointed out that she hadn’t asked for the clothes and that it did not involve her taking any time away from her work. But she said she’d been transparent and declared the dresses anyway.

Holly told Lembit off for trampling on Angela

Holly then chimed in to say Angela didn’t have to “defend herself”, insisting: “That’s not your role here.”

Turning back to Lembit, who was appearing via video, she said: “We were talking about you, Lembit, talking about your friend.

“And in order to defend him you don’t need to trample on somebody else.”

Viewers were gripped by the entire exchange.

“Love Holly and Phil for standing up to him,” one person posted on Twitter.
