Today Show's Jenna Bush Hager had dinner with King Charles hours before Queen's death

American TV host Jenna Bush Hager has detailed the dinner she shared with then Prince Charles hours before the news broke of Queen Elizabeth’s death.

The NBC’s Today Show host, who is the daughter of U.S. President George W. Bush, was in Ayrshire, Scotland and dined with now King Charles III on the very last night he would be called Prince Charles.

The 40-year-old Texan was set to interview Camilla, former Duchess of Cornwall, now queen consort, over dinner on the eve of an interview about their shared passion for books and Camilla’s own book club, the Reading Room.

But when Camilla’s flight was delayed, it was Charles who took her place.

Since returning from Scotland she has now spoken about her experience having dinner with now King Charles and preparing for the interview hours before it was announced that Queen Elizabeth II had died.

She stated, “It was a lovely meal…We had a wonderful evening filled with conversation that felt joyful…so I think this was sort of a surprise.”

She later spoke about the morning of the scheduled interview. “The next morning we were setting up the interview…We heard a helicopter, which they don’t take lightly, go off and they came in and said your interview, which up until then we knew they were excited about, has been postponed…”

She said things came to a halt after the royals’ team then made a request.

She added, “They said the queen is ill and they have gone and rushed off to be with her. And we just said our hearts are with them.”

She realized the importance and rarity of having such an inside glimpse of that moment, telling Hoda and Craig, “It was living history.”

After Queen Elizabeth II’s passing, Charles released a statement honoring the late British monarch.

“The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family,” the royal wrote in a Sept. 8 statement shared by Buckingham Palace. “We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Mother.”
