Hollywood actor Tom Hardy has proven that he’s not just an action star on-screen after winning another martial arts competition.
Hardy made a surprise appearance at the 2022 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Open Championship held at Oakgrove school in Milton Keynes over the weekend.
The actor, who is known for his alpha male roles in Peaky Blinders, Bronson, The Dark Night Rises and Mad Max, successfully subdued all of his opponents, winning all of his matches in the tournament.
It’s not the first time that Hardy has made a low-key appearance at a martial arts competition, in August he also won the REORG Open Jiu-Jitsu Championship in Wolverhampton.
Hardy, who is actually a blue belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, has been training in the sport for years and it has played a huge role in some of his biggest physical transformations.
As he continues to progress in his MMA career, here’s everything you need to know about Hardy’s intense workout regimes and diets over the years.
What is Tom Hardy’s workout routine?
Tom Hardy’s success in his recent martial arts competitions comes after years of training as the actor first got involved in the sport back in 2011.
It’s reported that he started training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu while preparing for his role in the film Warrior, which saw him play an MMA fighter.
Hardy’s appearance at the recent tournaments has proven that he’s kept up with his MMA training and it seems that MMA also plays a big part in Hardy’s workout routines when it comes to preparing for his other roles.
According to Metro, the actor went “beast mode” to prepare for his role in Venom in 2017, working out five times a week and sometimes twice a day with his pro MMA fighter trainer Nathan Jones.
Although it’s clear that MMA plays a big part in Hardy’s fitness, the actor’s workout regime hasn’t been constant over the years and he’s had to adapt it in line with his roles.
He’s had to undergo some intense physical transformations during his career, most notably for his role as Charles Bronson in 2008, and surprisingly his workouts often happen outside of the gym.
Opening up about the workout routine he followed to become Bronson, Hardy told askmen: “When it came to conditioning my body for the role of Charles Bronson there was no official regime: I did very non-specific exercises such as press ups, push ups, abs work and resistance training”
He added: “My approach was to do a lot of repetitions in order to send messages to my muscles: this helps them start to grow in a way that you can’t make them in the gym.”
He also revealed that while preparing for his role in Stuart: A Life Backwards in 2007, he was “doing three to seven miles running a day”.
What is Tom Hardy’s diet like?
When it comes to diet, Hardy has also had to adapt this many times for his roles too.
However, the actor has previously revealed that his regular diet isn’t very good, telling askmen: “I’ll admit to you guys my normal diet is usually terrible: I tend to get up, have a sandwich and then realise I’m going to pass out.
He went on: “Normally l’ll have loads of coffee (it used to be cigarettes) and then eat a big meal before going to sleep, which is obviously not good for my metabolism.”
For his role as Charles Bronson, Hardy put on 2 and a half stone with a diet of chicken and rice, pizza, ice cream and Coca-Cola.
The actor also had to bulk up for his role as Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, revealing to New York Daily News that he’d gained 30lbs of muscle for the role, it was reported that he ate six full meals a day to do this.
But his diet isn’t always about bulking up, for Mad Max: Fury Road, Hardy needed to lose weight instead, telling Collider: “I’m meant to drop 30 pounds so smoking and one meal a day is my training at the moment.”
