Will Smith will have to 'wait' to relaunch acting career, claims film producer

Hancock actor Will Smith will have to wait a while before he decides to relaunch his career, claims an American movie producer.

The LA filmmaker who asked to remain anonymous, said: “Everyone suspected the Academy would come down hard on Will. It is now a waiting game for him.

“If he wants to come back then he will have to forget about new 2022 work, take time away and show the industry he is remorseful and [his] temper has been addressed.

“He will need a Hollywood ally to step up for him and back his screen return, whether it be film or TV. It is 50/50 at the moment.”

Smith’s Netflix movie Fast and Loose is on the back burner and Bad Boys 4 for Sony is on “pause” following the Oscars incident.

Apple plus network bosses have to decide the fate of his last filmed project – their TV movie Emancipation.

Publicly the film remains on schedule to debut in 2022.

On Friday night the Academy blasted Smith’s “harmful, unacceptable” behaviour that “overshadowed” the evening.

It said: “We are sorry. This was an opportunity for us to set an example for our guests, viewers and Academy family around the world and we fell short.”

The academy also banned the actor from attending the Oscars for ten years.

Smith, 53, slapped Rock on stage after the comedian made a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett-Smith’s shaved head.

The 50-year-old has been open about her struggles with alopecia and appeared unenthusiastic when the comedian made the joke.

Smith then won the Oscar for Best Actor in his role as Richard Williams.

He later apologised to Rock, 57 who has said he is “processing” the incident but will not press criminal charges.

Following the slap, Smith took to his social media account to send out an apology for his behaviour.

He penned: “Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behaviour at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable.

Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.

“I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.”

After apologising to the academy for his actions, he added: “I deeply regret that my behaviour has stained what has been an otherwise gorgeous journey for all of us. I am a work in progress.”
