X Factor Matt Terry convinced he'd lost finale after awkward backstage blunder

X Factor winner Matt Terry has revealed why he wanted to “kill” host Dermot O’Leary when he was on the show.

The singer was crowned the winner of the competition back in 2016 but in those last moments before it was announced there was more going on behind-the-scenes than Matt let on.

When chatting exclusively to showbiz reporter Carly Hacon on a Daily Star Facebook Live, he revealed what happened before his crowning moment.

Matt, 28, said: “So, basically we were backstage, I remember it so clearly, Nicole was on my right holding my hand and Sharon was on my left with Saraa (Aalto).

“By accident, they pressed play on Saraa’s version of when Christmas Comes Around and I knew that because it was in her key, as we had different keys for the song.

“Immediately, I thought ‘Oh, my god, they are queueing up the music for the winner’s song and it’s Saraa’s.’

“As much as I love her, we were tight, we said no matter what, it’s been a great journey but I wanted to win, she wanted to win.

“I remember thinking ‘nope, I have not come this far and been through everything’.

“It all pointed to me coming second, I refused to believe it and that was my mind that just got me through it.”

Talking about how long he had to wait for Dermot to announce the decision, he said: “That had to be like the record of the longest it ever took, I felt like I turned 24 at that time it felt like two years had passed.”

In a previous interview with Hayley Palmer, Matt recalled the same moment and said: “It felt like forever, honestly, I could have killed him, I could have killed Dermot it was so long.”

He also revealed his dream music collabs and revealed how Sam Smith and Adele would be in the runnings.

Matt, 28, said: “I feel like Sam Smith and I would sound great together. If I’m shooting for the stars, Adele, hello! Unrealistic, let’s be real but I can dream. I love her, I nearly swore then, sorry, but she’s the one.”
