X Factor's Janet Devlin 'feared falling for women' as she struggled with sexuality

X Factor’s Janet Devlin has opened up about her sexuality and how she still struggles with it to this day.

Janet officially came out to her fans in 2018 in a YouTube video where she revealed how nervous she was about doing so.

The stunning musician has now chatted exclusively to the Daily Star ahead of her It’s Not That Deep tour which kicked off this week.

Talking to showbiz reporter Carly Hacon on a Daily Star Facebook Live, about whether she’s comfortable with her sexuality four years on, Janet says she still struggles.

Janet said: “I want to say yes but I still struggle with it. I absolutely do. I prefer the term queer now it’s way more fun I feel like people who understand what queer is, understand me a little better.

“I do struggle with it with as where I came from where I grew up it’s a very small-town mentality and it’s a very Christian background.

“To say I’m completely accepting of who I am would be a lie but it’s still something I’m working on.”

As she looked back on her YouTube announcement which explained how she had not seriously dated a woman, only men, host Carly asked her if this had changed.

Janet recalled: “At the time I was afraid of falling in love with a woman, but I’m just not dating at the minute. So, I’ve taken myself completely off the scene, I’m trying to focus on my mental health with the borderline personality disorder diagnosis I got recently.

“And turn my energy inward and fix myself before I start putting someone through a living hell because if you’re struggling with BPD and you get into a relationship it’s like the worst thing to do.”

Janet came fifth in the ITV singing competition

Talking about her latest mental health diagnosis, she explained how it has now made things a lot more clear and it helps make sense of her turbulent past.

The singer explained: “It made stuff a lot more clear as to when I tell people all the things I went through in my life they usually look at me like I’m a crazy person. But when I explain it’s because of the BPD or bipolar, especially the self-harm, the alcohol and eating disorder, it all ties into BPD.”
