Alan Titchmarsh threatens to quit TV for good over ‘terrifying’ craze

Fed-up Alan Titchmarsh has threatened to quit telly over “cancel culture” and branded the craze “terrifying”.

The garden guru, 74, said he can’t keep up with saying the right thing and worries people will deliberately twist his words to make a mountain out of a molehill.

He said: “Cancel culture is terrifying. It makes you very careful about what you say, and if the point ever came when that strain and that worry became too much, for me or my family, I think I’d say, enough. I’ll go. This is the first time I’ve ever admitted that. But I’ve had a good run.”

The green-fingered star poured his heart out over fellow daytime telly stars who have been hounded out of their jobs recently.

Alan said: “It’s heartbreaking. Particularly for their families. As you get older you realise it’s an increasingly fragile path, because you can so easily be misconstrued. There are days whenI think, do I really want to be putting my head above this parapet? I’m 75 next birthday.” He refuses to use the word ‘woke’ but accused right-on loons of being hypocrites.

The broadcaster said: “What worries me most is that there is an evergrowing faction of people that endeavour to say you think this or that, even if that might not be what you said or what you meant. Tolerance should work both ways. And I don’t feel it always does entirely.”

He also chimed in over eco stunts which have brought motorways to a standstill and caused mass chaos.

Alan said: “Everyone has a right to protest, but those who glue themselves to things must make sure that when they go home they do something useful, even if it’s just planting a plant.

“It’s all very well talking about the environment, but people have to get involved. Get out there, take over a bit of scrub land, breathe in the air.”
