Antiques Roadshow guest ‘didn’t care’ about ‘creepy’ dolls — until he got value

An Antiques Roadshow guest was left stunned after he took a pair of “creepy” dolls he “doesn’t care for” to get valued and was given a jaw-dropping price.

The self-professed collector appeared on the US version of the program, which airs on PBS, with two wooden dolls he had bought from a woman who had inherited them for just $100 (£82). But he admitted he almost passed on the offer because he didn’t have much of an interest for dolls.

He explained that didn’t know much more about them as he turned to antiques expert Julie Scott if she could tell him anything more. In the clip, which has gained more than 3,000 likes, the collector explained: “I’ve brought in two very old wooden dolls. I don’t know a great deal about them. I’m very curious what you can tell me about them.

“I’ve been collecting since I was a child. I buy and I trade and I love stuff. And a woman called me and asked me if I wanted to buy some dolls, and I said, ‘no, I don’t care so much about dolls’.

“She said, ‘they’re very, very old’. Maybe you could look at them. I understand she inherited them and she didn’t know anything about them.”

However, Julie Scott believes the bloke found himself “a bargain” as she explained that the real value was much higher. She said: “We’ll just talk about the big doll today. This early English doll dates from early 1700s and were only owned by wealthy children or children of royalty in particular.

“She’s completely wood, except for her upper arm and her upper arm feels like it is a cloth. She has a human hair wig and that may or may not be original to her.

“There are very few of these that have ever survived. You do find them in museums. She’s in very good condition, and because she is of that early 1700s Queen Anne period in a retail setting, she probably would be valued in the range of $15,000 (£12.3k) to $20,000 (£16.4k).”

The bloke was left flabbergasted as he replied: “Really? Oh my. For the two dolls, I paid $100.” To which, the expert replied: “You had quite the bargain.”

TikTok viewers were left stunned as they took to the comments claiming the bloke will care about dolls now he’s seen the price tag. One viewer said: “…and just like that he is Suddenly into dolls!”

Another added: “She’s both creepy and cool..” A third commented: “Imagine the value with EVEN MORE HUMAN HAIR.”
