Antiques Roadshow guest floored at value of designer junk shop item he bought for £25

An Antiques Roadshow guest was left stunned after learning the true value of a designer item his family had bought for just £25 from a junk shop.

The BBC show returned for another instalment on Sunday evening with bringing along a trunk he had found at his mother-in-law’s house, which she used for her tools.

But it wasn’t just any old piece of luggage as it turned out to be a vintage Louis Vuitton piece, which had been purchased for around £25 in a junk shop in the 80s.

The guest explained: “I came by this by chance! I went down to see my mother-in-law to help her do some DIY and I asked her where her tools were and she said they were in a shed in a box.

“I walked into her shed, saw this, opened it, found all the tools, went back, did the DIY and said: ‘By the way, I think you’ve got something quite special in the shed!’

“And so she said: ‘Well, if you want it, you can have it but never sell it!'”

Expert, Hilary Kay, noted all the details, explaining the Louis Vuitton find was from just before 1896.

After studying the item, Hilary revealed that with the right buyer it could go for a minimum of £5,000 at auction but could even fetch £7,500.

To which the guest exclaimed: “Wow!”

Asked what he was planning to do with the item, the guest said: “I have two daughters here with me who made me bring it today…

“I think they’ve got their eyes on it! How they’ll split it? I don’t know!”

The news comes after another guest couldn’t believe her ears as an expert told her that a diamond ring that she’d found hidden in a sock was worth a fortune.
