Antiques Roadshow guest speechless by eye-watering value of family bowl on BBC show

Two guests on BBC’s Antiques Roadshow were left completely stunned after their elaborate Japanese bowl was valued at an astonishing £55,000.

During Sunday night’s (August 6) show, expert Lars Tharp analysed a decorative bowl which included carefully painted images of faces and dragons.

Explaining how the item came into their possession, the gentleman who appeared on the show with a younger woman said the item had been in his family for a number of years but he knew “very little about it”.

He also said that his mother used to own the bowl.

Providing more insight, the guests also revealed that they previously owned two bowls but one of them accidentally broke when someone played football in the house.

However, the guests were shocked when the expert revealed it was worth over £50k.

Lars said: “In today’s market I think this would appeal and it would probably appeal at the range of maybe let’s say, £55,000.”

Gobsmacked, the pair both simply said, “Wow”.

The guest’s bowl was made by Kutani and although it had a crack in the base, Lars described it as “spectacular”.

After seeing the astonishing scenes, one viewer took to Twitter and wrote: “55 grand for that vase.”

While another penned: “I imagine that family never played football in the house again.”

Earlier in the show, viewers said they wanted to “switch off” as presenter Fiona Bruce went through her segment Basic, Better, Best.

During the programme, Fiona would ask her audience to guess the value of three items.

However fans at home were not too keen and took to Twitter to share their grievances.

One fan said: “This segment makes me switch off. I couldn’t care less which one the host drools over. “

Another said: “It’s the FiFi MeMe segment. Bog time.”

While a third person shared a gif of a crowd of people leaving a room and penned: “Fiona: Time for my favourit part of the show … everyone else at home:…”
