The Great British Bake Off viewers have hit out at Alison Hammond after she made a faux pas during this week’s show.
On Tuesday (October 3), Alison returned to our screens as she presented the second week of the Channel 4 titan. The This Morning host took over presenting duties from Matt Lucas, who left the show shortly after last year’s series ended.
This week saw the bakers tackle biscuits, and judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood had an ace up their sleeve when setting the Signature challenge of the show. Prue and Paul asked the bakers to make a set of tea cakes.

In order to win the coveted title of “Star Baker” for the week, the contestants had to make twelve sweet tea cakes, which typically contain marshmallow as a key ingredient. After making the marshmallow treats, the bakers also had to face a custard cream technical, before going on to make an illusion set of biscuits to resemble their favourite meal.
But whilst the show progressed and another baker had to leave the tent, many fans were not focussing on the programme. Instead, many were taking issue with Alison’s pronunciation of the word ‘marshmallow’.
One viewer watching at home immediately jumped to Twitter to ask: “Why do they keep calling marshmallow marshmello?! Driving me up the wall!!” A second fan agreed, writing in disappointment: “I was really enjoying Alison Hammond on The Great British Bake Off and then I heard her call marshmallow ‘marshmEllow’ and now we’re over. It’s right there on the label and in the way you SPELL IT!”
A third gently wondered: “Why can the lovely Alison not say marshmallow?” Whilst a fourth commented: “Alison has been a brilliant addition to The Great British Bake off BUT it is MarshMallow, not Marshmello.”
Other fans picked up that fellow host and comedian Noel Fielding had inadvertently picked up the pronunciation. Some viewers believed that he had pronounced the word correctly before switching to the wrong way.
A fan of the show took to social media to say: “Noel pronounced it properly at the start but now he’s joined the others.” A second user agreed, asking: “Is it just me or was Noel saying ‘Marshmellow’ and not ‘Marshmallow’?”
The bakers are gearing up for their third week in the competition, set to be broadcast next Tuesday (October 10). In the third instalment of the series, the bakers will take on bread in the hopes of impressing Paul and Prue and making it to the next round.
The Great British Bake Off airs every Tuesday at 8pm on Channel 4.
