BBC Breakfast chaos as Naga Munchetty forced to apologise over awkward technical blunder

BBC Breakfast was thrown into a meltdown after a technical error caused viewers to lose signal midway through the show.

Hosts Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt were presenting the BBC morning show on Friday (December 15) when the technical blunder took place. The pair were talking to regular weather presenter Matt Taylor, who had left the studio and was instead broadcasting from an outside location.

Taylor was in County Durham to deliver the nation’s weather forecast in the early hours. He also was there to give some interesting information regarding the Beamish Museum, where the team were broadcasting from.

Walking down the Victorian-style streets, Matt continued to speak to those in the area whilst letting viewers know of the upcoming weather for the day. But soon after he began an interview with a guest, the BBC had a technical mishap which caused the pictures and sound to drop unexpectedly – leaving Naga to apologise for the blip.

Naga and Charlie joked as they ended a conversation with sports reporter Mike Bushell, who was at Alexandra Palace for the World Darts Championship. The pair took quick jibes at weather present Matt, with Naga quipping: “I don’t know how Matt is going to top that.”

The cameras then cut to Taylor, who had been providing a number of great costumes for viewers to enjoy whilst giving his weather report. As he began his segment, he noted: “We are on the streets which date to the 1900s, and coming up the street is Martin who is delivering all the treats from the shop here.”

As Matt brought Martin onto the screen to chat to him about the sweet treats he was bringing the locals, cameras immediately cut out. Together with the sound, the images were completely lost, leaving viewers watching at home seeing nothing but a black screen.

Back in the BBC Breakfast studios in Salford, Naga tried to reconnect with Matt, but to no avail. “Mike? Apologies there are some technical problems with Matt in County Durham.”

As she finished her apology, Matt returned to our screens once again, as Naga quickly reintroduced the presenter. “I think he is back, hi Matt,” she gingerly said.

Matt could hear Naga and, still with his on-air guest, confirmed they were back live in County Durham. The pair went on to discuss how the Beamish Museum came to be and what was being celebrated to commemorate the history of the local area.

With the rest of the interview suffering no glitches, Matt eventually handed back over to the team in the studio. As Matt finished his forecast, Naga thanked Matt for his work: “Matt thanks so much, we will see you later.”

She also commended his ability to keep calm and carry on in the face of awkward difficulties. “Well done with them technical issues!” she quipped. “Those Gremlins in the place!”

However, things did not last that long as later on in the show, Matt would again run into a glitches that caused the feed to be lost in the middle of his report. Apologising for a second time, Naga said: “Apologies, Gremlins are bothering Matt today aren’t they, a little one there! But we got most of it!”

BBC Breakfast airs every weekday at 6am on BBC One and the BBC iPlayer.
