BBC Breakfast's Jon Kay steps in after 'X-rated' photo is shown on-air

BBC Breakfast host Jon Kay seemed a little concerned when a racy looking wildlife photo was aired on Wednesday morning’s (March 15) programme.

They were looking at a photo of three toads giving each-other a piggyback captured by James Roddie, titled “Hitching a Lift”.

But Jon joked they shouldn’t have shown the snap before the 9pm watershed as it looked like they were getting up to something more intimate.

He quipped: “I’m not sure we should show that picture before 9pm, actually, but yeah.”

In broadcasting, the watershed is the time of day when TV programmes unsuitable for children can be shown as they might contain violent or sexual content.

Presenters Jon and Sally Nugent were speaking to winning wildlife photographers Charlie Page and Billy Evans-Freke who scooped up several awards at the British Wildlife Photography awards 2023.

Billy won the Young British Wildlife Photographer of the Year and an award in the 15 to 17-year-old for his photo ‘Branching out’, a stunning photo of a tawny owl perched on a branch.

Charlie took home the overall prize and won in the Urban Wildlife category for his incredible photo of a fox roaming around a deforested area.

It comes after Sally apologised to viewers on Tuesday’s show for getting the day wrong at the start of the programme.

As always, they gave viewers the latest headlines from across the globe at the start of each show and regularly during the broadcast.

Greeting viewers, she said: “‘Good morning it is Mon, sorry, Tuesday the 14th of March’, before going on to highlight the top news story of the day.

But luckily, she managed to style out her error and move on with the rest of the show.
