EastEnders fans are still recovering from the epic Christmas Day murder twist but some can’t help but think ahead to what could happen next in Walford.
The BBC One soap has already confirmed the departure of Whitney Dean (Shona McGarty) and the return of Johnny Carter (Charlie Suff) but what exactly leads to these decisions remains under wraps for now.
Cast members have also been spotted filming funeral scenes which are yet to air and while reports suggest the send off is for Aunt Sal, some fans are convinced it could be a “decoy”.

As we prepare to enter 2024, Daily Star has taken a look at what could happen in the Square over the next 12 months.
Whitney death horror
It was confirmed in August this year that Shona McGarty had quit her role as Whitney Dean after 15 years. The soap star told Inside Soap at the time: “It wasn’t an easy decision because I’ve made so many friends.” Her departure from Walford will air in 2024 and fans have been guessing how she will leave Albert Square. Artificially intelligent “creative” tool Bard AI said it was “possible” Whitney will leave Walford under tragic circumstances.
It continued: “She has been through a lot of trauma in her life, and she may finally decide that she can’t take anymore. She may be killed off, or she may simply decide to disappear from Walford without a trace. Whatever the reason for Whitney’s exit, it is sure to be a dramatic and emotional one. Bosses will want a memorable exit for a character who has been a part of the show for 15 years.”
Reiss exposed
Fans have watched Reiss Clowell (Jonny Freeman) and Sonia Folwer (Natalie Cassidy) begin their IVF treatment as they bid to become parents to their own child. Reiss is married ti wife Debbie, who is hospitalised in a long-term coma after suffering a stroke in the bath. Skint Reiss resorted to stealing money from wife Debbie’s bank account to fund their baby plans -something he failed to tell Sonia about.
Some viewers reckon the pair’s baby dream could be over before it starts. Predicting a big twist, viewers are certain one of Debbie’s relative could arrive in the square – to cause plenty of drama. On X, formerly known as Twitter, one person said: “I wonder if one of the relatives of Debbie will come to Walford before she wakes up to expose what Reiss has done with her money?”. Another viewer penned: “I reckon Debbie is gonna wake up and throw a spanner into this storyline.”
Funeral twist
EastEnders cast members were caught filming funeral scenes in November this year with reports suggesting that Aunt Sal (Anna Karen) is being killed off in the new year. Peggy Mitchell’s sister hasn’t been seen on screen since 17 but according to The Sun, she will be given a huge send off in scenes set to air in 2024. However, some fans are convinced that another major character would be in the coffin. Taking to X, one fan penned: Aunt Sal’s funeral is a decoy.”

EastEnders have already confirmed that Johnny Carter is heading back to Walford in 2024 after five years away from the Square. EastEnders boss Chris Clenshaw said at the time: “Although we haven’t seen Johnny on the Square in almost five years, his character remains linked to the show and its most iconic venue, The Queen Vic. Since his short time away, the Carter family dynamics have changed significantly, and it’s safe to say that Johnny will be returning to a very different Walford than the one he left.” Fans will have to wait and see what exactly brings him back with his former alcoholic mother Linda Carter (Kellie Bright) recently hitting the bottle once again and his dad Mick Carter (Danny Dyer) still missing.
EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday on BBC One at 7.30pm
