BBC Saturday Kitchen chaos as Matt Tebbutt forced to tell fans ‘this wasn’t rehearsed’

Saturday Kitchen host Matt Tebbutt has appeared to sign up to join the star-studded cast of a beloved BBC gameshow live on air.

During this week’s (October 21) edition of the morning cookery show, the TV chef welcomed comedian and Weakest Link host Romesh Ranganathan onto the show alongside food and wine expert Helen McGinn. It didn’t take long before the TV chef poked fun at the food writer ahead of her appearance on the evening gameshow next week.

But the author soon got her own back when she joked that Matt was actually quite a huge fan of the show and secretly wanted to sign up for the programme. Helen chuckled: “You’re quite a big fan of the show aren’t you? And actually – he doesn’t like to talk about it – but Matt really, really, really wants to do the Weakest Link.”

Shocked at her admission, Matt immediately shut down her claims, arguing: “What? No, no, no, no, no, no. Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow. This wasn’t rehearsed, this wasn’t rehearsed. I absolutely would have said no I do not want to do this.”

It was at this point that Romesh addressed camera one when he announced that the TV chef would indeed be joining the next series of the show. He told viewers: “Oh that’s so good, well I can exclusively reveal here, Matt is going to be on the next series of The Weakest Link.”

The comic went on to urge viewers to keep the presenter to his word and tweet him online to remind him to accept the offer. He added: “If he tries to back out of it, please do tweet him, just get in touch any way you can. Use the hashtag #MattIsntTheWeakestLink, something like that.

“Let’s get him on, okay? Let’s get behind this, I’m so pleased for you,” Romesh chuckled. “Do you know what? When I came in I thought, ‘He’s buzzing for some reason, he’s got an energy to him’.

“And now I know, listen I’m happy to make your dreams come true,” he joked, as he wrapped his arm around the host and beamed to the camera. Fans soon flooded to the social media platform X – formerly known as Twitter – to share their thoughts on the idea online.

One user penned: “Let’s get @matt_tebbutt on the Weakest Link UK with @RomeshRang #getmattontheweakestlink #wearestlink #saturdaykitchen.” Another agreed: “There you have it Romesh and Helen have ambushed Matt and signed him up for The Weakest Link! [cry-laughing emoji].”

A third echoed: “I love how uncomfortable @matt_tebbutt is about this. We need to get him on the show #MattIsntTheWeakestLink.” It was clear to see Helen was glowing with excitement at the idea after Matt made fun of her attempt on the show which is set to air this week.

At the start of the show, producers aired the embarrassing moment when she incorrectly answered an obvious question on the programme. Romesh asked her: “In geography, what E name follows the largest mountain above sea level?”

It was at this point that the writer squirmed before confessing “I don’t know” to which the host answered “Everest”. When the clip ended, Matt and Romesh were quick to poke fun at her expense, with the host adding: “What she did beautifully there was not know the answer and also take a long time to answer.”
