Britney Spears feared VMAs snake would ‘kill her’ on stage in terrifying performance

Britney Spears has countless iconic and memorable moments, but her VMA performance is one that quickly springs to mind.

After hitting the VMAs stage with a huge snake as she performed I’m A Slave 4 U, the audience was mesmerised. But as it turns out, Britney could barely get up the courage to go out on stage.

Speaking in her new memoir, The Woman in Me, Britney explained that she was terrified of the snake – and one moment had her shook to her core. In the book, Britney said she was handed the snake and refuse to look at it.

She added: “All I knew was to look down. I felt if I looked up and caught its eye, it would kill me.

“In my head I was saying, just perform, just use your legs and perform. But what nobody knows is that as I was singing, the snake brought its head round to my face, right up to me, and started hissing at me.

“You didn’t see that shot on the TV, but in real life? I was just thinking, ‘Are you f***ing serious right now? The f***ing snake’s tongue is flicking out at me. Right. Now.”

She admitted she was thrilled when she was finally able to hand the snake back to the trainer and get off the stage. But looking at the performance, the pro looked completely unbothered by the reptile.

Two years ago, the snake handler spoke to Today and told the publication that Britney was “very good” and “focused”, despite being initially scared of the snake. The handler, Michael Hano, added: “You could see that she was able to focus and kind of push yourself to be able to work with the thing and look comfortable doing it.”

Britney has opened up on numerous facts about her history in her debut book – and there’s a lot to share. From her childhood, relationship with her parents and her history with men, she’s spilled it all.
