‘Broke’ Nolans sister can’t retire at 69 despite making fortune and selling millions

A member of one of the biggest music groups of the 1970s has admitted she cannot retire, due to having no savings.

Maureen Nolan, 69, became part one of the biggest groups of the time when she and her sisters topped the charts as The Nolans. Some of the other members of the group included Coleen Nolan, Bernie and Linda.

The group dominated the charts with tracks such as I’m in the Mood for Dancing and Gotta Pull Myself Together, making huge waves in the music industry. But now Maureen has revealed that despite her success, she has no financial long-term plans, and currently lives in a rented house.

Speaking to The Mirror, Maureen says her and her sisters were conned by merchants when the group were formed back in 1974. She added that because the sisters did not know any better, they were gullible and led to some poor financial decisions.

She admitted: “I need to keep working. We thought we’d be comfortably set up by this point in our lives, but I don’t have a pension, I don’t have any savings and I rent a house.

“When I split up from my husband in 2016, we sold our home,” she continued. “I couldn’t have bought a new place without a mortgage and at my age you can’t get a mortgage.”

“I never thought I would ever rent. It would be nice to have just enough money to say, ‘OK, I’m out of here, showbiz-wise.’ But I don’t have that.”

Maureen is the longest-serving member of the troupe, having been a part of the group for 31 years in a row. She said that in her time as part of The Nolans, the band “made millions”, but the money went elsewhere whilst they sung with the likes of Frank Sinatra.

Nolan is now touring as part of a production of The Calendar Girls: The Musical, touring across the UK. She added that her financial instability does worry her, believing that “Showbusiness is feast or famine.”

“Of course, I worry about money and the older I get the more I worry,” she continued. “They say money doesn’t buy happiness, but it makes misery a little bit easier, I think.”

Despite the financial struggles she faces, Maureen is taking her situation with a pinch of salt. “There’s no point being bitter and twisted, you’re still broke – so, I try to treat it with humour.”

With the exception of Coleen, who has found fame on ITV ‘s Loose Women, Maureen said that her sisters have been left in similar situations to herself and are being forced to keep on working. Maureen joked that in time she may be able to retire, “or I could go and live with Coleen”.

Maureen’s financial woes are not the only thing to worry about, as she lives in the shadow of cancer, that has affected many of her family bandmates. Only Maureen and 71-year-old sister Denise have not fallen victim to the disease, whilst sister Bernie sadly passed away from the condition in 2013.
