Brooklyn 99 was once axed and renewed in 24 hours after outrage – and with lots of changes

Brooklyn Nine-Nine has had an incredibly popular and loyal fanbase since it started in 2013.

The beloved characters firmly had a place in its viewers hearts, and fans were left devastated after hearing the news that Andre Braugher, who played Captain Holt, sadly died aged 61. As we celebrate his life and legacy he left behind, we’ve looked back at one of his most popular shows – Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

Ahead of its final ever series in 2021, fans were heartbroken to discover the end of the US sitcom was confirmed – and this time there was no changing their minds. The network had decided it wanted to end the show while it was still popular, and with the detectives married, having babies and getting promotions, it was a natural end.

But it wasn’t always how they were going to go. In 2018, after the season five finale, Fox announced they would not be renewing the series again after a drop in viewers.

If that had happened, the last ever episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine would have been Jake and Amy tying the knot, and viewers not finding out if Captain Holt had been appointed Commissioner.

When it was announced that Fox would be cancelling the series, outrage ensued on Twitter. Brooklyn Nine-Nine became the top trending topic in the world, with celebrities getting involved to share their frustrations.

Trending posts included people begging to renew the series, while others simply expressed their frustrations with cries of “no” and “I can’t believe it”. But the outrage made a huge difference – and just 24 hours later, it was picked up once again.

Producers were reportedly bombarded with calls from various networks who saw the fury from fans and ultimately, NBC stood in to help. They made the announcement shortly after Fox severed ties and the show was picked up for a sixth season.

The news of the show being picked up again clearly sparked enough of a reaction to get people watching the show again, because after figures had dropped to 2.7m for season 5, it shot back up to 3.1m in season 6. Streaming figures are likely to be even higher, given the show is also aired around the world, including in the UK, on Netflix.

Twitter once again went into a frenzy as it was confirmed the beloved show would be back on air, but some changes had been made. One key difference is that the swearing rules had changed.

Terry Crews once told Buzzfeed’s AM to DM: “We could not do any bleeping out, no fuzzy nudity… But now there’s lots of bleeping and lots of fuzzy nudity. It’s like Brooklyn Nine-Nine after dark.”

Viewers also saw things take a slightly darker turn after Captain Holt didn’t get his New York police commissioner job and he went off the deep end. He had branded himself a “loser” and ultimately decided to quit the NYPD – until Jake and Amy brought him back from the edge.

Finally, writers opted to completely scrap the storyline that Charles and Gina were step siblings and the first episode of season six saw Charles asking Gina why his mum had decided to divorce his dad.

Ultimately, the series went on to have another successful few seasons, but came to a close in 2021 after a final heist after Holt and Amy were leaving the precinct for their roles as deputy commissioner and chief of the reform program. Terry discovered he had taken over as Captain of the precinct and Gina also makes a final appearance having left the show years prior.

Jake also confirmed he was leaving the precinct to be a stay at home dad so Amy could focus on her job.
