Bucks Fizz’s Cheryl Baker begs BBC bosses for invite to Eurovision Song Contest

Bucks Fizz winner Cheryl Baker has begged BBC bosses for an invite to the Eurovision Song Contest more than 40 years after the group won the music competition.

Over the past few days, fans have been glued to their screens to find out which countries have made it through to the grand final which will take place at Liverpool’s M&S Bank Arena on Saturday, May 13.

The United Kingdom are hosting the 2023 contest on behalf of last year’s winners Ukraine who are unable to host due to the ongoing war.

In an exclusive interview with Daily Star, the mum-of-two revealed the band are keeping the big date available in case their invite arrives late in the post.

She told us: “We’re still gigging on back of winning the Eurovision Song Contest, we’re doing a gig in Liverpool the night before Eurovision.

“Hopefully the BBC will invite us to be guests, there’s only ever been five winners in the UK ever in the history of Eurovision, only five.

“Surely they’re going to invite us, you know, I mean I’ve kept the night clear so we can do it, but we should be there.”

In 1981, the group, which was made up of singers Bobby G, Mike Nolan and Jay Aston, blew viewers away back when they won the high-profile competition with their number one hit single Making Your Mind Up.

Their chart-topping track became famous for their memorable routine which saw the girls’ skirts ripped off halfway through the performance only to reveal even shorter skirts underneath.

Although the group were favourites to win, the song faced stiff competition from Germany, which they narrowly beat by just four points in the grand final.

The songstress went on to reveal that had they not won the competition, the group would have only had a successful career for a maximum of six months.

She recalled: “We’d already been number five in the charts, so we’d had a top five hit and so maybe we’d have had another six months of success and they we’d have been dropped by the record label had we not won Eurovision.

“But of course, we did win and that’s why we are still doing gigs up and down the country and we’re celebrating out 40th musical anniversary.”
