Busted’s Matt Willis ‘bares his soul’ as he opens up on lengthy addiction battle

Busted star Matt Willis opened up about his lengthy battle with drink and drugs, revealing he bared his soul to make his upcoming documentary, Fighting Addiction.

The singer has been incredibly successful as part of Busted, has been happily married to TV presenter Emma Willis since July 2008 and is the doting dad of three children.

But the 40-year-old has struggled with addiction for most of his adult life and examines his history with substance abuse in the raw BBC documentary which airs on Wednesday (May 17).

During an appearance on Lorraine, Matt revealed the original aim of the documentary was to learn more about the science behind addiction but as time went on, there was “more of a powerful and personal story.”

The I’m A Celeb star has entered rehab several times, admitting his fourth and final stint was just before he married Emma.

He told the 63-year-old: “I went to many different ones over the years like really posh ones, ones that were out of the way and I went to a very real place.

“I sat in a room and went, ‘I need to be here’. And I was very cautious of that because there’s a cliché with pop stars and drug abuse.”

As part of filming the documentary, Matt and the former Big Brother presenter visited a centre in Glasgow and listened to other people’s stories about addiction.

“That was an amazing experience. Emma’s never done anything like that before and she was really nervous,” he explained.

The Year 3000 hitmaker continued: “But she resonated with everything that everyone said, and that’s for the loved ones of people with addiction.

“That’s the forgotten tale because everything’s always about the addict, and that is important because then you get clean, but then the effect that that has on the people that love them is so massive.”

Lorraine welcomed Matt onto her show on Wednesday

Matt confessed he relapsed just before going on tour with Busted in 2016 and explained he’s worried as he prepares to head on tour again later this year.

“Luckily the boys are amazing and they love me and want me to be well. And we have a job to do so it’s in everyone’s interest for me to not be wrecked,” he said.

The TV personality went on to say: “But I feel good about that right now because everything’s in a good place with Busted right now.”
