Gangsta rap hero Ice Cube has revealed cops ran his old band off stage over their “F*** tha Police” lyrics – then cheekily asked for autographs.
In the late 1980s, N.W.A were the most controversial band on the planet, causing a stir with their 1988 debut Straight Outta Compton.
Tracks such as F*** tha Police and Gangsta Gangsta even caught the attention of the FBI who sent a letter asking them to remove their record from shelves.

Authorities tried to stop N.W.A performing certain songs and even arrested members for doing so.
Now, 35 years on, Ice Cube has revealed what really went on during incidents involving cops.
Speaking on the Joe Rogan Experience the rap star turned Hollywood actor said he and his bandmates, including Dr. Dre and Eazy-E, would often hide after concerts to evade capture.
However, he added that despite being read the riot act the band could also be asked to sign some merchandise – by officers.

Cube, real name O’Shea Jackson Sr, described a scene in the band-inspired biopic, also called Straight Outta Compton, where they’re run off stage in Detroit by undercover police after a performance.
He said: “They catch us, they round us up then they say, ‘you can’t come through Detroit talking like that’ and ‘we should run you out of jail’ you know, I mean, ‘we should lock y’all up and blah blah blah’.

“And he said ‘uh but if y’all got a couple pictures y’all signing for my daughter we ain’t gonna have no problems’.
“Eazy-E was like ‘get T-shirts, get them everything they need’, and we signed this s**t reluctantly.

Cube said that whenever they arrived in a new town or city they were always informed by a senior officer what was obscene in that area, and what could and couldn’t be said, under threat of arrest.
He added that after performances the band would often quickly change clothes and try to blend into the crowds so they weren’t arrested.
“In Cincinnati I saw the police looking around and I didn’t have a chance to change my s**t, so I hit the exit,” he said.

He said when he got outside he bumped into some fans who drove him to Kentucky to hide.
Cube added that when no police followed them he was taken back to the hotel where his bandmates were.
“And then you got Eazy-E and Dre saying ‘where’d you go man? We all got citations and we got to come back here. They want us to fly back here to go to court. And they was looking for you, they couldn’t catch you’.
“I was like ‘man I did a dip, and I’m a dip again next show’.”
