Coronation Street fans rejoice as legend announces return after three years away

One Coronation Street legend had his fans thrilled as he announced a major return to the cobbles after three years away from the ITV soap.

Jonathan Harvey, a notorious soap writer, has returned to Weatherfield to write more scripts for the programme after originally contributing to more than 300 episodes.

Liverpool-born Jonathan first agreed to write for the show back in 2004, and helped shape Todd Grimshaw’s coming out storyline as the soap’s first openly gay character.

He’d originally rejected an offer from Granada Television as he thought soap writing was “beneath him”, but as a gay man himself decided to change that in order to help bring the topic of sexuality to more viewers.

The playwright confessed to The Times: “I was offered Coronation Street a few times but always said no. I thought it was beneath me, to be honest.

“But it’s really nice to be writing for something that you know is going to be on screen.”

He added that some Corrie actors are “not so good”, adding: “You quickly learn who says your lines correctly and who doesn’t.”

Jonathan also claimed that Corrie bosses are “always trying to tone down my campness” when it comes to scripts.

With 310 episodes under his belt, Jonathan says Sean Tully is his favourite character to write dialogue for.

And though the star has continued to write for Corrie all throughout the last few decades, the Covid-19 pandemic meant he couldn’t step foot on the actual cobbles for the last three years – until now.

Posting a snap in sunny Manchester as he stood in the middle of the road with the Rovers Return behind him, Jonathan could be seen bundled up in a khaki puffer jacket and matching pants as he beamed for the camera.

A woolly hat helped protect him from the winter chill settled over England, while he added a pair of trainers and stuck his hands in his pockets for the cheery picture.

“Back on the cobbles for the first time in 3 years!” he captioned the sweet snap.

His fans went wild in the replies section on Twitter, with one writing: “Love it when Jonathan Harvey writes the Corrie scripts!”

Another echoed: “Hallelujah. Let’s hope this means a return to realistic character-based storylines.”

“Brilliant news,” someone else gushed, while another penned: “Awesome, let’s have some comedy in these storylines!”
