But viewers soon rushed to Twitter to point out how Paul can afford a coffee despite being in serious debt.

“Why’s Paul buying coffee if he’s skint? It doesn’t make sense,” pondered one viewer.

Another added: “Paul is skint but he can afford to buy Roy’s overpriced coffee when he only lives 50 yards away?”

“Paul is in terrible debt. So how does he decide to spend the money he doesn’t have? On coffee from Roy’s, when he’s 50ft from his own kettle,” raged a third person.

Paul faced worry and heartache in the past few weeks after being told he couldn’t work due an injury he sustained.

In Wednesday’s episode he went to his referral appointment to see if there were any results on when his hand would heal. However he was ultimately given the unofficial diagnosis of motor neurone disease, with three years to live.

The ITV soap is working closely with the MND Association on this storyline, which will explore the challenges faced by Paul and those around him in the coming months.

Speaking about working on the storyline, Paul actor Peter Ash said: “Paul is completely blindsided by the diagnosis and he decides to keep it from his family and friends as he tries to come to terms with the news.

“I knew very little about MND before embarking on the storyline and I am hugely grateful to the MND Association for all their help and support.

“For any actor playing a role which examines a real life issue or condition there comes a huge sense of responsibility and we are aware that some people watching this storyline are experiencing it in reality, it is their life.”
