Coronation Street’s iconic pub the Rovers Return has officially closed its doors for refurbishment after new owners took over.
Earlier this week, the staff had their contracts terminated with immediate effect after the pub was signed over to Newton and Ridley by landlady Jenny Connor (Sally Ann Matthews). Viewers have watched Jenny struggle to keep the place afloat in the midst of the cost of living crisis and she was left with no choice but to sell the boozer.
With the Rovers’ doors now closed down for extensive refurbishment, Daily Star has used artificially intelligent “creative” tool Bard AI to find out whether the pub could return with a new name. The system said: “There have been reports that the new owners may decide to rebrand the pub in an attempt to make it more trendy.

“This could include changing the name to something more modern, such as “The Roverz” or “Rovers Bar & Grill.” If the name is changed, it is likely to cause a lot of upset among the Weatherfield residents. The Rovers Return is an iconic pub with a long history, and many people see it as the heart of the community. However, it is a decision that is likely to be met with a lot of debate and discussion.”
Back in 1990, there were plans to turn the Rovers into an American-style bar called Yankees. When the Weatherfield residents caught wind of the plan, then owner Alec Gilroy (Roy Barraclough) and his family locked the pub and refused to leave. While the Gilroy’s were eventually evicted, Alec’s friend in the brewery, Cecil Newton (Kenneth Alan Taylor) came out of retirement to put a stop to the plans.

He announced that the Rovers would always be a working man’s pub at the plans were scrapped. Despite there being a chance the name could change, Bard AI recognised the pub has been under different ownerships countless times since it was first built in 1902 and the name has always stayed the same.
The system added: “It is also worth noting that the Rovers Return has been under new ownership many times over the years. However, the name has always remained the same. This suggests that the producers of Coronation Street are aware of the importance of the name to the fans and the show’s history.
