Corrie legend looks completely unrecognisable as he celebrates 92nd birthday

A Coronation Street legend has stunned fans of the long-running soap after a snap emerged of him looking drastically different to his days on the cobbles.

Kenneth Cope, who won the nation’s hearts playing Jed Stone, recently celebrated his 92nd birthday, and to honour the occasion, he uploaded a celebratory post to Facebook.

The renowned actor, who provided comic relief during his time on the show, looked full of glee as he posed with a glass of wine at the dining room table.

The man who worked a plethora of odd jobs in the Mancunian soap swapped his clean-shaven face and trademark flat cap for a grey beard and a bucket hat.

Keeping it casual, he wore a black sweatshirt and black trousers as he tucked into a roast dinner featuring an array of sprouts, potatoes and carrots.

And by the sounds of it, Cope had every reason to be in good spirits as he’d been inundated with people wishing him a happy birthday.

Speaking to his fans on Facebook, he wrote: “Thank you for all the Happy Birthday messages.”

One user said: “Happy Birthday, Kenneth; great to see you enjoying your birthday.”

While another beamed: “Bless you, sir.”

A third user went the extra mile, typing: “Happy Birthday, Kenneth. Always loved your work; take care.”

The esteemed performer didn’t just accumulate supporters in Manchester, but in Liverpool as well, for his work on Brookside, portraying the character of Ray Hilton.

But it will always be his role in Corrie that he’s most appreciated for.

He made his first appearance back in 1961, eventually leaving the show five years later, before returning in 2008.

In a dramatic comeback, his character was pitted against fearsome property developer, Tony Gordon, who would later go on to blow up the factory.

After several months of action, he left the soap again prior to showing his face one last time in 2014, for the trial of Ken Barlow.

Having now hung up his acting books, he’s started pursuing a career in writing, scribing a weekly column for the Southport Visitor newspaper.
