Ed Sheeran didn’t ‘snub’ Coronation Concert and claims he never received an invite

Singer Ed Sheeran has cleared up his absence from the Coronation Concert line up, as he addresses rumours that he may have ‘snubbed’ the royal celebrations.

The Shape Of You singer revealed that he wasn’t ever asked to perform at the BBC concert at Windsor Castle, and was always busy touring in the US across the Coronation bank holiday.

Speaking in a radio interview, Ed addressed the concert and comments asking why he wasn’t taking to the stage to perform.

Speaking to the hosts, Ed said: “Lots of people are saying to me how it’s random [Katy Perry and Lionel Richie] are going to sing at the King’s Coronation… I want to clear something up actually.

“No one ever asked me [to perform].”

He continued: “I assume if they went online and went ‘what’s Ed doing on May 6’ they would go ‘oh he’s playing in Dallas’ so I think that’s what’s happened.”

“I never ever turned it down. I wasn’t asked but yeah, I am excited to tune into that. Historic, isn’t it?”

Whilst Ed might not have officially turned down a request from the Royal family to perform, there were others in the music industry who declined to perform at the royal concert.

British performers Adele, Elton John, Robbie Williams and The Spice Girls were all reportedly asked to join the Coronation Concert line up but declined.

Neighbours star Kylie Minogue was also reportedly requested for the celebrations, but turned down the chance to sing due to the huge republican sentiment in her home country of Australia.

Advisors to the pint sized popstar reportedly warned her from performing, as the idea of constitutional reform has been increasing since Queen Elizabeth II’s death in September last year.

The concert was hosted by Downton Abbey and Paddington star Hugh Bonneville, as it took place in the grounds of Windsor Castle with 20,000 people alongside the royal family and King Charles and Queen Camilla.
