On what would have been George’s 60th birthday, Elton paused his set and praised the icon on the Glastonbury stage.
Before filming their duet, Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me, Elton said: “This is a very special day today, I wondered how I was going to approach it.
“One of Britain’s most fantastic singers and songwriters was George Michael.
“He was my friend, he was an inspiration, and today would have been his 60th birthday, so I want to dedicate this song to his memory.
“All the music he left us with is so gorgeous. This is for you George.”
As Elton began speaking, he appeared to wipe a tear from underneath his glasses as he remembered the famous star who sadly died on Christmas Day 2016.
Taking to Twitter, fans immediately shared their thoughts on the tribute and remembered the pair, with one user writing: “Elton’s Tribute to George Michael [crying] the sun will never go down on his music.”
Another said: “Elton John paying tribute to George Michael is everything! Giving us all the feels and reminding us of the amazing music we’ve lost.”
A third wrote: “Thank you Elton, that was just magnificent. Your tribute to George totally broke me.”
Elton’s performance had been highly anticipated after teasing surprise guests for the gig.
He welcomed four surprise sings including Jacob Lusk and the London Community Choir, Stephen Sanchez, Brandon Flowers and Rina Sawayama.
The famous singer also shared his excitement that he was performing at the festival, telling the Pyramid Stage crowd: “I never thought I’d ever play Glastonbury and here I am. I’d better play well and I’d better entertain you.”
