Emmerdale’s Jacob star addresses co-star exit as he drops murder bombshell

Emmerdale star Matthew Wolfenden’s character David Metcalfe will not be killed off on the soap.

The actor, 43, joined the cast of the ITV soap as David in 2006 but recently announced he would be leaving the Dales after 17 years.

Fans have been speculating how David could bid farewell to village, but a tragic death for the character is now off the cards.

Joe-Warren Plant, who plays David’s son, Jacob Gallagher, appeared on Lorraine where he addressed his on-screen father’s upcoming exit.

The presenter, 63, said: “It’s like your second family, which is great.

“But I know you will miss Matthew [Wolfenden] a lot who has left, but door open, he’s not gone for good I don’t think.” The 21-year-old responded: “Yeah, they are not killing him off so the door is still open,” as Lorraine interjected: “Which is always good when that doesn’t happen!”

Addressing his exit earlier this month on This Morning, Matthew told viewers: “It feels like the right time. The door’s left open, they’re not killing me off, I’ve been promised. I’m allowed to tell you that. So who knows, I might be back, we will see.”

Things got emotional for the TV star after he was shown a montage of his best bits from his time as shopkeeper David. As Holly Willoughby recognised the huge role Emmerdale has played in his life, Matthew replied: “It has been a massive part of my life. I’m just so grateful.”

He added: “I met my wife on the show, had three kids, it’s given me 18 years of an amazing job and it’s giving me a family. So to leave it, it’s been a big big part of my life. So to leave it … it’s been the most amazing 18 years.”

In 2018, Matthew tied the knot with his co-star Charley Webb, who played Debbie Dingle, and the couple share three sons together. Matthew’s reason for leaving the soap was due to a lack of “gritty storylines,” with a source telling The Sun: “Matthew has had an amazing time on the soap, but feels ready for a change. He hasn’t been getting any gritty storylines recently so wants to see what else is out there.

“He’s a fan favourite so will get a lot of support in whatever he decides to do next.” The insider added: “He’s very excited about the opportunities available. He’s only just announced he is leaving so scriptwriters are working out his on-screen exit.”
