Genesis star gives Phil Collins health update saying he's 'less mobile than he was'

Former Genesis guitarist Mike Rutherford appeared on BBC Breakfast to give an update on band member and close pal Phil Collins.

Speaking to the presenters, the 72-year-old expressed that Phil, 72, is “much more immobile than he used to be” as he discussed their past tour.

“Phil is much more immobile than he used to be,” Mike started. “It’s a shame but at the tour he was in good spirits and he’s fine now at home, enjoying life.

“He’s worked so hard over the years, I think he’s enjoying his time at home,” he added.

Mike also revealed that Phil’s son Nic had joined them on tour as their regular drummer couldn’t make it.

“He’s joining us, our regular Gary can’t make this one so Nic is going to step in and he’s a fantastic drummer,” Mike confirmed.

When asked if Phil would be proud to see his son on stage with his former bandmates, Mike replied: “I think so, on stage at the last tour it was really nice to have the two of them side by side.”

Phil has been suffering from prolonged health conditions for around 15 years, including acute pancreatitis, an injured vertebrae in his upper neck which has led to crippling nerve damage and “foot drop” which sees him now wearing orthopedic shoes.

Genesis went on their final tour at the O2 last year, where a “frail” looking Phil bid fans an emotional final goodbye.

Fans who attended tweeted their thoughts of the show, with one writing: “Privileged to see Genesis and Phil Collins tonight at the O2 which after 51 years in the business was the last ever concert,

“When you get to see how frail Phil Collins is this was an amazing show from someone who stuck two fingers up at his illness.”

A second wrote: “There was laughter, there were tears: last night’s @genesis_band show was indeed the last show that the band will perform after 50+ years of loyal service.

“But with @PhilCollinsFeed on fine form and his son Nick an incredible drummer in his own right, this was one for the books.”
