“It’s my baby daughter’s 17th birthday,” Kate said as she was met with an “aww” by the studio.

“I know,” Kate said, adding: “And her present was supposed to be driving lessons which I found quite hard to lock down. There is a lot of delays and it’s hard to get hold of it.”

She continued: “So I did suggest to her last night… ‘Darcey if it comes to it, I may have to teach you how to drive’.”

Jacqui Smith and Iain Dale, who appeared on the breakfast programme to discuss Boris Johnson putting his dad Stanley forward for an honour, were shocked at the idea.

Ben and the former Labour politician let out huge gasps as Iain insisted: “No, no! That’s madness.”

Kate explained: “Her response was, ‘Mum, somebody in this family needs to know how to park’,” before the studio erupted in laughter.

The former GMTV presenter went on to say: “She certainly won’t put me forward for an Honours List, will she?”

Ben chimed in: “So wise. That girl is so, so wise in so many ways,” before he wished Darcy a happy birthday.

Derek is undergoing “potentially life-saving” medicinal trials

It comes after Kate opened up about her “tough” financial struggles as she revealed her husband Derek, 55, is undergoing “potentially life-saving” medicinal trials.

“Perhaps there is the assumption that because I’m on the telly, and because people have heard so much of Derek’s story – and he has touched so many hearts – that we’ve had special treatment from the NHS or bypassed waiting lists,” she said.

Kate insisted: “We haven’t jumped any queues, which is just as it should be. There are only so many resources, and we are still waiting on referrals from almost three years ago. Of course, it’s been tough financially.”
