GMB's Richard Madeley had 'remarkable' friendship with George Michael after lunch invite

Good Morning Britain host Richard Madeley shared with viewers the moment his “remarkable” friendship with pop star George Michael started in the height of a media storm.

Richard told co-hosts Susanna Reid and Richard Arnold that the pair met shortly after George was publicly outed and Richard had invited him over for lunch since they both lived in the same area.

He looked back on the moment and laughed, explaining that when George turned up to his house, it felt like there was “a Beatle on his doorstep”.

The pop star had arrived with his then-partner Kenny Goss.

“It was surreal,” Richard told viewers. “One o’clock, I’m cooking lunch, take my pinny off, go and open the front door, it’s like a Beatle on your doorstep,

Richard found the experience “surreal”

“It was about a year after he’d been outed, he was very comfortable with it. He came in his leather jacket and his shades, with Kenny next to him, very good looking and in they came.”

Richard continued: “We just had this amazing six or seven hours of conversation, we spoke a lot about how he’d responded to being outed and he turned it around.”

Susanna was starstruck by Richard’s friendship with George, and said: “Goodness me Richard! What an absolutely remarkable encounter!”

“It was, it went on until, I’m sad to say, we all lost him to drugs,” Richard candidly revealed. “It was awful, the last year, he wouldn’t take calls, he wouldn’t talk to people, he was having all these weird incidents, driving at three in the morning and crashing the car.

“And then that Christmas day came and we lost him,” he concluded.

Richard added that he was looking forward to the Channel 4 documentary about George’s victorious fight against the tabloids after he was outed.

It’s set to feature interviews from his inner circle – including Kenny Goss, former manager Simon Napier-Bell, and cousin and business partner Andros Georgiou.
